In recent years, more and more girls and young women have been struggling quietly with low self-esteem, anxiety, perfectionism, harsh self-criticism, and emotional overwhelm. While some struggles may be visible externally, many young women appear “high functioning” on the outside while internally feeling not good enough, emotionally exhausted, disconnected from themselves, or constantly worried about disappointing others.
At Toronto Psychotherapy Space, we have seen a significant increase in young women seeking therapy for anxiety, low confidence, perfectionism, people pleasing, emotional regulation difficulties, body image concerns, and chronic self-doubt. Many are incredibly intelligent, compassionate, high-achieving, and thoughtful — yet still carry an intense inner critic that tells them they are failing, falling behind, or not enough.
The reality is that self-esteem struggles are becoming increasingly common among teenage girls and young women, especially in today’s world of social media comparison, academic pressure, burnout culture, and constant exposure to unrealistic expectations.
What Low Self-Esteem Can Actually Look Like
Low self-esteem does not always look obvious.
Sometimes it looks like:
- overthinking every conversation
- apologizing constantly
- comparing yourself to others
- struggling to make decisions
- difficulty setting boundaries
- perfectionism and fear of failure
- people pleasing
- anxiety and emotional overwhelm
- avoiding vulnerability
- difficulty trusting yourself
- feeling disconnected from your identity
- constantly needing reassurance
- harsh negative self-talk
Many young women become so used to criticizing themselves that it begins to feel normal. Over time, these thought patterns can shape core beliefs about who they are and how they move through the world.
The Link Between Anxiety and Self-Esteem
Anxiety and self-esteem are deeply connected.
When someone constantly worries about making mistakes, being judged, disappointing others, or not being good enough, the nervous system can remain in a near constant state of stress and hypervigilance. This can make it difficult to relax, trust yourself, regulate emotions, or feel confident in relationships, school, work, or social situations.
Many girls and young women also become trapped in cycles of perfectionism where self-worth becomes tied to achievement, appearance, productivity, or external validation.
Over time, this can contribute to:
- chronic anxiety
- burnout
- emotional dysregulation
- avoidance
- shame
- low confidence
- depression
- unhealthy relationship patterns
Social Media, Comparison, and the Inner Critic
One of the biggest challenges facing young women today is constant comparison.
Social media has created an environment where girls and young women are continuously exposed to carefully curated images of beauty, success, relationships, productivity, and lifestyle. Even when someone logically knows that social media is filtered or unrealistic, repeated exposure can still impact self-worth and self-perception.
Over time, many young women begin developing a harsh inner critic — an internal voice that constantly judges, compares, criticizes, or tells them they are falling short.
This inner critic often develops slowly through:
- social comparison
- bullying or exclusion
- criticism
- unrealistic expectations
- perfectionism
- attachment wounds
- shame-based experiences
- difficult relationships
When left unchallenged, these thought patterns can become automatic and deeply ingrained.
How Therapy Can Help Build Confidence and Self-Worth
Therapy can help girls and young women better understand themselves, challenge negative thought patterns, build emotional resilience, and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves.
At Toronto Psychotherapy Space, our therapists use evidence-based approaches such as:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
- self-compassion interventions
- mindfulness-based approaches
- emotional regulation strategies
- attachment-based therapy
- strengths-based therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Self-Esteem
CBT helps individuals recognize the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Many young women struggling with low self-esteem experience negative automatic thoughts such as:
- “I’m not good enough.”
- “Everyone else is doing better than me.”
- “I always mess things up.”
- “People won’t like the real me.”
Over time, CBT helps individuals learn how to identify cognitive distortions, challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, and build more balanced and compassionate perspectives.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Emotional Regulation
DBT helps individuals strengthen emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Many girls and young women were never fully taught how to:
- regulate emotions
- cope with overwhelm
- tolerate distress
- communicate needs
- set boundaries
- manage shame and self-criticism
DBT skills can help young women feel more grounded, emotionally aware, and confident navigating relationships and life stressors.
Self-Compassion and Rewiring the Inner Critic
Many individuals believe self-criticism motivates growth. In reality, chronic shame and harsh self-talk often increase anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and disconnection from self.
Research on self-compassion suggests that practicing more supportive and balanced ways of responding to ourselves can gradually help strengthen healthier neural pathways over time. Through repetition, reflection, and emotional awareness, it is possible to begin shifting long-standing patterns of shame, perfectionism, and self-criticism.
Building self-esteem is not about becoming perfect or confident all the time. It is about developing a healthier and more supportive relationship with yourself.
